Arsenal have been encouraged to try and sign Phil Foden after Manchester City completed the transfer of Rayan Cherki. City have added several new players ahead of the Club World Cup, including Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Cherki joined from Lyon for €42.5 million (£36.1 million) after a strong season in France’s Ligue 1. He also made an impression during his first two appearances for the French national team last week.

Cherki mostly played on the right side of Lyon’s attack, which has led to questions about where Foden now fits into Pep Guardiola’s plans at City.

When asked if Arsenal might try to sign Jack Grealish instead, former player Tony Cascarino said he believed Foden would be a more likely option. He pointed out that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had previously worked with Foden during his time at Manchester City, and that connection could play a role.

Cascarino also noted that Foden hasn’t performed at his best this season, especially considering he was the Football Writers’ Player of the Year the previous season.

With City spending heavily and making changes to their squad, Cascarino said he wouldn’t be shocked if Foden became available for transfer.

He added that although it’s unclear if City would allow Foden to join Arsenal, they have already let players like Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko move there. If Foden were available, he believes Arteta would seriously consider bringing him in.
